What is EFT?

EFT

EFT is short for Emotional Freedom Technique. It is also known as tapping and falls under a branch of therapies called Energy Psychology. It was devised by Gary Craig and has been used successfully for the last 20 years by many therapists to help with many different conditions. It would be best described as a combination of a talk therapy and acupressure.

Its theory comes from applied kinesiology and acupuncture. It consists of tapping on certain points on the body while focusing on the problem we would like to address. It is based on the idea that any time the body is in physical, mental or emotional distress it means the body’s energy is disrupted.

Tapping on specific acupuncture points helps clear the body’s energy system which results in the reduction or elimination of the problem.

Some Brief Science behind EFT

There is plenty of evidence to support it’s use!

When we experience a negative or emotional state (anger, upset, fear) our brain goes on alert. The body prepares for the fight or flight response; your adrenaline pumps, muscles tense, blood pressure, heart rate, blood sugar all go up. Now days most of these fight or flight responses are triggered internally often by a negative memory or thought that has its roots in a past trauma or conditioned learning from child hood.

Daily life is also filled with lots of small stressors which when you add them up the cumulative effect on the body and mind are massive. This leaves us sick, worn down, upset, overweight, stressed and unhappy. ‘What tapping does is halt the fight or flight response and reprogram the brain and body to act and react differently.

The stress response begins in the amygdala which is part of the limbic system. The limbic system is the source of emotions and long term memory, and is where negative experiences are encoded. The body’s smoke detector! An early negative experience can program the amygdala to raise the alarm when something similar triggers it in the future. The body does not distinguish between an actual threat and what the amygdala perceives as a threat.

EFT Science Continued…

Research at Harvard medical school has shown that stimulation of the acupuncture points decreases activity in the amygdala, hippocampus and other parts of the brain associated with fear. With an MRI it is possible to see the amygdala’s red alert being ‘called off’ when the acupuncture points are stimulated. Informal studies have shown that tapping may work better than needles in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Cortisol is a stress hormone related to a stress response.

Dawson Church (a researcher in the field of mind body medicine) looked at cortisol levels in 83 subjects after they received an hour long tapping session compared to talk therapy and no treatment. Cortisol in the tapping group dropped an average of 24% with some as high as 50%, while for those in the talk group and no treatment group there was no change in their cortisol levels.

The reduced cortisol levels in the EFT group correlated with decreased severity in anxiety, depression, and overall psychological symptoms.‘…the research evidence for energy psychology, coming from more than a dozen countries, suggests that it produces outcomes for a range of conditions that are unusually rapid, effective and lasting.’EFT often retrains the limbic response rapidly. When you think of something that causes you anxiety the thought sets off the amygdala fire alarm.

Tapping as your fight or flight response is triggered sends a message that the amygdala can deactivate. With repetition the hippocampus gets the message that there is no longer any danger and categorizes the thought/experience as nonthreatening. The hippocampus is the structure in the limbic system that controls contextual associations, where something was classified as threatening is now seen as nonthreatening.

Scientists speculate that retraining the limbic system in this way permanently alters the neural pathways in your brain, the conditioned fear pathways in the amygdala are eliminated. Neuroplasticity shows that the brain’s pathways are not permanent and can be altered. It is possible to develop new ways of thinking and perceiving the world.‘One of the most important epigenetic influences is stress….the emotional trauma of stress is now known to affect the expression of over one thousand genes, including many that influence ageing and cell regeneration.’

Acupuncture and acu-pressure (tapping) have been shown to increase the body’s endorphin levels, a feel good neurotransmitter. (Information sourced from ‘The Tapping Solution’ by Nick Ortner)

What our customers say about us

Peter asked me if I would like to have a session on left. I knew absolutely nothing about this method and went into it with an open mind. The session blew my mind, opening up past experiences that I have never shared with anyone. This is a process you can learn to do yourself. My session was all very calming with Peter explaining the process every step of the way without being intrusive. It certainly made me feel more confident in talking about my past experiences with my friends and relatives and gave me an added sense of wellbeing.

Hi Peter

I have been going to Peter at Grantham Acupuncture for over 2 and 1/2 years. I have tried different therapies with him. Peter suggested I tried eft as alot of aches and pains are often caused through stress related issues that you wouldnt realise are at the core of some of the problems.

By doing eft with Peter over a few sessions it has really helped me to deal with situations I have been carry  myself a long time. I can literally look at something and pull myself away emotionally, and not take the problem on as if it is mine alone.

Things do not play on my mind like they used to. I am able to put them aside. I can now take myself mentally and emotionally out of a situation but still be in the thick of it and being able to help someone but not take on and carry the stress with me.

I have been having EFT with Pete for a few weeks now, I was unsure as to what to expect as I had never heard of EFT before.

Pete puts you at ease, and is extremely good at what he does.

I have found that from having this treatment I have become much more self confident and this has had a positive impact on both my personal and professional life. People are noticing changes in me. I think EFT is helping me and Peter is the reason.

I’ve been seeing Peter for a number of years for sports massage and acupuncture treatments, which I find really helpful and beneficial. Peter asked if I would be interested in trying EFT. I had never heard of EFT before but Peter explained that it can be a way of clearing stress and anxiety from the body. I agreed to try it and I’m happy to say I was really surprised at how much it helped me dial down my stress levels. It even helped me work through a few issues from my past that I hadn’t fully resolved. I would highly recommend EFT for anyone who wants to feel better about themselves.
